What should I Wear for my Photoshoot?!

It can be really overwhelming to think of all the things you might have to do to get ready for a photoshoot. Whether it’s your engagement shoot, a love shoot, a maternity shoot, or we’re doing styled portraits, I decided I wanted to put a post together, a guide if you will, for what to wear when you’re shooting with me!

I know what you’re probably thinking: “Is she really trying to tell me/us what to wear to my own photoshoot?”. Well, um, yes, kind of. You chose me to be your photographer because you like the style in which I photograph (I hope!). There’s so many things that go into a good photo. The people themselves, the photographer (hey, that’s me!), post processing, what your wearing, if you got your hair done or not, etc. I’m going to need you to trust me on this one.

How to Prepare

Hair

In order to feel comfortable in front of the camera, it’s important to feel your best. When you feel your best, you look your best. If you aren’t a hair guru (I seriously suck at hair) or if you want it to look a certain way, I seriously suggest looking into getting your hair done for the shoot. If you have easy to manage hair that isn’t fussy and you have a certain way that you like to style it (whether you straighten it, curl it, make it wavy, whatever floats your boat), show up with said hairstyle! I don’t recommend you get a haircut, color your hair or try a new dramatic style for your shoot. You may like the way it looks in person, but you may not like the way it photographs..or you may not like it at all. Avoid a new “do” and come however you feel the most confident when it comes to your hair.

Makeup

I know their are a lot of you out there who don’t like makeup or just don’t wear it regularly. I’ve heard some people say “I don’t want to look overdone in my photos so I don’t want to get my makeup done” or “All I need is a little bit of powder, some eyeliner and mascara and I’m good to go”. Makeup for photographs is an art in itself. I highly recommend getting your makeup done by a professional. If you don’t know anyone, I have an in house makeup artist that does the makeup for most of my portrait sessions and she’s amazing! If that’s something you would be interested in, we can set that up!

What to Wear

Ok, so this one can be a tricky one because one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to style. I have four things that I always tell my clients when we’re getting ready for a portrait session, maternity session or a styled session. 1) Make sure you comfortable (comfortable=confidant) 2) Make sure what you’re wearing fits 3) Wear a neutral color (no patterns!) 4) If you can, wear a dress! (totally optional, but flowy dresses always look amazing in pictures!).

I like to give my clients a guide on what to wear and what to do to be prepared for our shoot because it has a lot to do with how the final photos come out.

Just a reminder, I do have a portrait package that covers all of the above in one package so you don’t have to worry about anything!

I look forward to our shooting adventures together, and don’t forget, if you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask!
